A Scenic Journey to Promote Kenya’s Beauty Through Sport

Running through the hills of Tinderet is not just about speed; it’s about experiencing the raw beauty of Kenya, where nature meets sport in the most breathtaking way.” – Erick Barng’etuny

CHALLENGE: Showcasing Kenya’s Scenic Terrain for Tourism through Athletics

In an effort to position Kenya not just as a sports destination but also as a prime location for tourism, Magical Kenya Athletics Kenya embarked on a unique project to integrate sports and tourism. The goal was to shine a light on the Tinderet Mountain Run, an annual long-distance trail race hosted around the scenic Tinderet Forest in Nandi County, and use the event as a platform to showcase the breathtaking landscapes of Kenya’s rural regions. With nearly 2,000 participants from across the country expected at the national championships, the challenge was to capture the race experience and tell a compelling story that would resonate with both local and international audiences.

SOLUTION: Crafting a Visual Story to Connect Sport and Scenic Beauty

Our role in this project was clear: we needed to visually package the experience of the Tinderet Mountain Run in a way that not only captured the excitement of the race but also highlighted the stunning beauty of the terrain surrounding it. We kicked off the project with a site visit to Taptengelei in Nandi County, where we met with the client at Rupa Mall in Eldoret City for breakfast before heading to the venue.

The journey was an experience in itself. As we drove along the meandering roads, the lush green hills and forested terrain provided a beautiful backdrop, setting the stage for the story we were about to tell. Upon arrival, we conducted a brief at Kikao, where we finalized our strategy for capturing the key moments of the race.

The primary objective was to ensure that the sport not only engaged athletes but also piqued the interest of potential tourists. By documenting the race experience through a mix of visual and audio content, we aimed to portray Kenya as a country filled with untapped beauty—one that could be discovered through the lens of both adventure sports and tourism.

RESULTS: Positioning Kenya as a Premier Destination for Sport and Tourism (Ongoing Project)

As we approached the finish line area, we were struck by the incredible vantage point—an expansive view of the surrounding hills and forests. It was clear that the region’s natural beauty would be a key component of the story we were telling. Kenya, in all its splendor, was laid out before us. The project was designed to show that this was more than just a race—it was an invitation to explore a part of Kenya that many people may not have experienced before.

The Tinderet Mountain Run’s visual storytelling has already begun to captivate those who are curious about the intersection of sport and tourism. Through a series of carefully curated images, videos, and stories, we are helping to build awareness of the event while positioning the region as a must-visit destination for both athletics and outdoor adventure. As the race approaches, the full scope of our efforts will come to fruition.

One more cool thing: The event isn’t just about the runners—it’s about the experience of being in one of the most beautiful corners of Kenya. The breathtaking sunset we witnessed as we wrapped up the day, surrounded by the forested hills, served as a perfect reminder of the hidden gems the region has to offer.

“Kenya is beautiful, man. You’ve got to come down here to appreciate it.” This sentiment from the team encapsulates the essence of the project, blending athletics with the exploration of Kenya’s stunning landscapes. As the Tinderet Mountain Run National Championships approach, it promises not only to be a race but a journey into one of Kenya’s most picturesque destinations. May the strongest runners win, and may the country continue to shine as a prime tourism hub.
