At Ko-Kos Coffee, we don’t just grow coffee; we cultivate a legacy of passion, sustainability, and community. Every bean represents our commitment to quality, and every cup is a taste of the care we pour into our farm and our people. — Willy Cheruiyot, Founder, Ko-Kos Coffee Farm
CHALLENGE: A Legacy Rooted in Resilience and Sustainability
Ko-Kos Coffee Farm, nestled on the slopes of the Cherangany Hills in Uasin Gishu County, was born from a family’s rich farming heritage and the vision of Willie Cheruiyot. While coffee wasn’t part of the area’s traditional farming culture, the farm’s unique location at an altitude of 1,900 – 2,200 meters above sea level, coupled with volcanic soils, made it a perfect fit for high-quality coffee cultivation.
Despite its natural advantages, the farm faced the challenge of developing a story that would resonate with both local and international coffee lovers while highlighting their commitment to sustainability and community. With Ko-Kos coffee now reaching Switzerland, where its processed beans are sold, there was a need to create a compelling brand story that would capture the essence of the farm’s commitment to organic practices, its deep-rooted connection to the community, and its vision for the future of coffee.
SOLUTION: Cultivating the Story of Coffee, Community, and Quality
We approached the project with a clear objective: to craft a narrative that would not only elevate Ko-Kos Coffee’s presence in Switzerland but also establish a deep, authentic connection with its community. We worked closely with Willie Cheruiyot to uncover the history of the farm, the family’s journey, and the core values that drive the business forward. The result was a multi-faceted approach that included visual content, a documentary script, and a redesigned website to better reflect the farm’s mission and practices.
The story was centered on the farm’s dedication to sustainability, which set it apart from other coffee producers. Every aspect of Ko-Kos’ farming practices, from hand-picking ripe cherries to organic farming methods that avoid harmful chemicals, was highlighted to emphasize their commitment to the environment and quality. In addition, the story delved into the human aspect of the farm—the welfare of employees and the community that surrounds Ko-Kos. We highlighted how the farm’s workers are housed on-site and provided with medical insurance, positioning the surrounding community as the first beneficiaries of the farm’s success.
The documentary script we crafted was a narrative journey, taking viewers from soil testing, seed selection, and organic farm management practices to the social impact Ko-Kos has on the local population. This approach was designed to give potential customers and partners a deeper understanding of the farm’s holistic approach to coffee production.
RESULTS: Building a Brand Story That Resonates Globally (Ongoing Project)
This project is ongoing, and while the initial steps have been implemented with success, the full results are yet to be seen. The strategic storytelling approach has laid a strong foundation for Ko-Kos Coffee to connect with its audience in Switzerland and beyond. The narrative, which focuses on the farm’s organic, sustainable farming practices, its commitment to community welfare, and the quality of the coffee, has been well-received in initial promotional campaigns. The high-quality photographs, revamped website, and documentary are all working to build Ko-Kos’ online presence and generate greater awareness of the brand.
In Switzerland, where Ko-Kos Coffee is sold, the brand is starting to gain recognition—not only for its exceptional taste but also for its story. The farm’s dedication to sustainability and the well-being of its workers has become a key point of differentiation in a competitive market.
However, as an ongoing project, the full impact of these efforts is still unfolding. Ko-Kos is continuing to grow its presence, both locally and internationally, and the story continues to evolve with each cup of coffee they produce.
One more cool thing: We’ve encouraged the Ko-Kos team to integrate their commitment to the environment by using eco-friendly packaging materials that reflect the farm’s core values and sustainability efforts—bringing their brand story to life in yet another impactful way.
As this project continues to unfold, Ko-Kos Coffee is laying a powerful foundation for future growth, with a brand story rooted in authenticity, quality, and the community it serves. The full results are still on the horizon, but the journey has only just begun.
